What happens at the visit

You stay in the room the whole time. The doctor checks how clearly your child sees, how the eyes work together and the health of each eye. To a young child, most of it feels like a game.
Signs worth an exam

Book an exam if your child:
- holds books or screens very close
- squints or tilts the head to see
- covers one eye
- gets headaches after reading
A passed school screening does not rule out a problem a full exam would find.
Questions about children's eye exams
My child cannot read yet. Can you still test their vision?
Yes. We use picture charts and other tests that need no reading.
Will my child's eyes be dilated?
Sometimes. The doctor tells you first and explains why. The drops sting for a moment. Vision is blurry for several hours, and in children it can last until the next day.
Do you carry frames for children?
Yes. Our optical has frames sized for small faces, with flexible hinges. Lucinda fits them and shows your child how to take them off with two hands.
